Abstract: Exhaust particulate matter (PM) is the most complex of exhaust emissions. Particulate matter, as defined by most emission standards, is filterable material sampled from diluted and cooled exhaust gases. This definition includes both solids, as well as liquid material which condenses during the dilution process.

Using a nationwide network of monitoring sites, EPA has developed ambient air quality trends for particle pollution, also called Particulate Matter (PM). PM 2.5 describes fine inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller. Under the Clean Air Act, EPA sets and reviews national air quality standards for PM. Particulates – also known as atmospheric aerosol particles, atmospheric particulate matter, particulate matter (PM), or suspended particulate matter (SPM) – are microscopic particles of solid or liquid matter suspended in the air. The term aerosol commonly refers to the particulate/air mixture, as opposed to the particulate matter alone. Numerous scientific studies have linked particle pollution exposure to a variety of problems, including: premature death in people with heart or lung disease.
